A coupling is a mechanical element part that connects two shafts together to accurately transmit the power from the drive side to the driven side while absorbing the mounting error (misalignment), etc. of the two shafts. A gear is a rotating circular machine part having cut teeth or, in the case of a cogwheel or gearwheel, inserted teeth (called cogs), which mesh with another (compatible) toothed part to transmit (convert) torque and speed.

The types of shaft couplings that we can provide are shown below:

1. Curved Jaw Coupling - The curved jaw coupling consists of two metal hubs and a polyurethane elastic body, which gives it an excellent impact absorption performance. 

2. Disc Coupling - The disc couplings consist of two metal hubs and a stainless membrane. The stainless membrane is thin and easy to bend, thus allowing it to better absorb deviations. The disc couplings are classified into a single and double membrane shaft coupling.

3. Beam Coupling - The beam couplings use the slit to balance the relative torque and transmit the torque. It features no backlash and is easy to maintain. Beam couplings are classified into helical slit couplings and parallel slit couplings.

4. Oldham Coupling - The Oldham couplings consist of two hubs and a centre block, with the centre block made of a plastic material in order to absorb deviation, reduce vibration, and ensure electrical insulation.

5. High-Gain Rubber Type Coupling - High-gain rubber type couplings consist of aluminium alloy and rubber. There is no clearance, and it features a better response ability over other shaft coupling types.

6. Bellows Coupling - The bellow couplings are capable of absorbing a large radical, axial and angular deviation.

7. Rigid Coupling - The rigid shaft couplings feature strict requirements for installation, and cannot deviate. Because of their small volume and easy installation, they are becoming increasingly popular.

8. Encoder Coupling - Encoder couplings are used in encoders, and are popular due to their excellent elasticity and ability to absorb a large deviation.

 

All are available in a variety of mounting options including set screw, keyway, clamp, conical and shrink disc configurations.

Double loop-shaped, thermoplastic compensating coupling element made from HYTREL ®, a Thermoplastic Ether Ester Elastomer (TEEE) from DuPont.

Owing to the high reverse bending strength of the flexible material and the cardan-like shaping of the power transmitter, this development is the ingenious, technical solution for shaft displacement problems in motive power engineering, and in measurement and control techniques.

Recommendations for our products are for the design of: shaft-angle encoders, counting mechanisms, tachogenerators, servo valves, elevating tables, feeding drives, pumps, compressors and ventilators, kitchen equipment, office systems, textile machines and for numerous applications in the automobile and aircraft industries.

The one-piece coupling is frictionless, wear less, and silent, and works without any troubling effects (i.e., without troubling structure-borne sounds).

Thus, in changes of direction or rotation, or during torque fluctuations with load direction reversal, PAGUFLEX ® PLUS enables play-free and shock-free power transmission, together with effective vibration damping and sound insulation.

In numerous technical applications, the material HYTREL ® has been successfully substituted not only for established thermoplastics, but also for elastomers. It combines ideally the advantages of both materials, and is therefore the best innovation for flexible shaft couplings.

It enables the opening up of new areas of applications for extremely low and high temperatures. Also, in association with media in which, owing to their sensitivity, elastic elements have shown themselves to be of `limited use´. Further applications are those in which up to now the reverse bending strength of the material has set, narrow limits with regard to mechanical fatigue loading. In these, PAGUFLEX ® PLUS is now the solution.

The high flexibility of the thermoplastic coupling element effectively lightens the burden on the shaft bearings of motors and machines, even in circumstances of large radial and angular alignment errors. With the help of PAGUFLEX ® PLUS, the bearings run quieter, warm-up less, and achieve longer durability, thus lengthening service life.

The double loop coupling uses a moulded plastic element permanently swaged to steel or stainless steel hubs to give a compact design. It forms an effective two-stage coupling with exceptional flexibility in all three modes. Ideal for transmitting rotation in small drives, this type of coupling works without any friction, wear or noise, although its low torsional stiffness makes it less suitable for high precision positioning applications.

Shaft collars are machine components featuring a simple design that consists of a round metal or plastic ring with a clamp screw or screws. Tightening the screws causes the ring to tighten or loosen around the shaft. When securely tightened, shaft collars can serve as mechanical stops or hold components in place along a shaft. Despite their simple design, shaft collars play an important role in a wide range of industrial applications. 

TYPES OF SHAFT COLLARS

Shaft collars provide three primary functions: 1) holding components in place, 2) locating or positioning components on a shaft, and 3) creating an attachment between shaft and another component. Some of the types commonly available include:

Threaded shaft collars. Threaded shaft collars have a threaded interior that allows for use on threaded shafts, making them an excellent choice for heavy-load applications requiring high axial holding power. The threaded design also allows for easy adjustments and precise positioning.

One-piece shaft collars. They feature a simple design featuring a single screw. They work by surrounding the shaft with an evenly distributed compressive force . Since they cannot be disassembled, one-piece collars are only suitable for applications where the end of the shaft is accessible.

Two-piece shaft collars. These can be completely disassembled, allowing them to be used in situations where the end of the shaft is not accessible. Two-piece collars also provide greater holding force and shock-load resistance.

Hinge shaft collars. Their design allows for easy disassembly and reassembly along the shaft. They consist of a single unit that can be installed without the risk of dropping loose parts.

Heavy-duty shaft collars. Compared to other shaft collar designs, heavy-duty shaft collars feature larger clamping screws and greater outer diameters and widths. The torsional holding capacity of heavy-duty collars is approximately twice that of standard collars.

Shaft Collar Bore Varieties. Bore shaft collars are manufactured in round, threaded, hexagonal, and square configurations. Round bore shaft collars are used as stops, locators, spacers, and bearing faces for a broad range of motion control, power transmission, and mounting applications. They are suitable for use on shafts, piping and tubing, and split hubs. Threaded bore shaft collars provide exceptional axial holding power without damaging threaded shafts. Their simple yet flexible design enables quick assembly and easy adjustments. Hexagonal shaft collars and square shaft collars are exclusively manufactured by Stafford Manufacturing to fit hexagonal or square shafts.

FAST'S® Gear Couplings
The FAST’S® design, with its lifetime all-metal end ring, provides up to 300% greater lubricant capacity. This means that longer periods between relubrication may be scheduled. It is the only coupling designed to use oil lubrication. The all-metal end ring, used exclusively in FAST’S® couplings, eliminates the need for any type of perishable lube seal (o-rings, lip seals, cork gaskets, etc.). The end ring not only provides the dam over which lubricant must flow to escape, but it additionally pilots the sleeve with respect to the hub during start-up and shut-down operations. It further eliminates partial tooth disengagement with resulting tooth overloads by providing sleeve teeth which are flush against the inside wall of the end ring. WALDRON® Gear CouplingsFULL ENGAGEMENT TEETHThe WALDRON® gear coupling has been designed with full length tooth engagement with the inherent result of longer life and improved performance. OPTIONAL PILOT RINGSThe standard WALDRON® coupling consists of two identical half couplings. Magnaloy Coupling Company has been manufacturing precision machined products since 1956, including the original light weight, heavy-duty flexible drive coupling.  Today, Magnaloy offers many products in addition to Flexible Drive Couplings including, Pump/Motor Mounts, Cylinder Rod End Alignment Couplers, Hydraulic Manifolds & Manifolding Accessories and Hydraulic Reservoirs.

Flexible Drive Couplings
Magnaloy is the original lightweight, heavy-duty flexible drive coupling. Light weight magnesium construction makes Magnaloy couplings 76% lighter than cast iron and 36% lighter than aluminum units... and they’re stronger than either!

The benefits are many... Reduced loads on bearings, shafts and pumps, for longer component life. Easier handling and installation. Rust proof and corrosion resistant.

Magnaloy’s close machining tolerances (TIR of .002”) assures vibration-free operation and easy, accurate alignment without need for special tools. Solid magnesium alloy permanent mold castings are heat treated and offer the highest strength-toweight ratio available. They also offer better corrosion resistance and easier handling

Magnaloy Couplings are available with a variety of special features which include splined bores. Many additional splined bores are available by contacting the factory, including straight sided “PTO” type splines and metric splines.

The Clamp-Type Coupling utilized the basic Magnaloy coupling with the addition of the clamp feature. Developed to compensate for variations in spline formation methods and tolerances. Assures centering of the coupling and positive retention on the shaft. The clamp feature is suggested for all splined couplings, but is also available in smooth bored and keyed models.

Magnaloy’s Steel Bushed Splined Bore Coupling combines all the design and lightweight features of the Magnaloy Coupling with the added spline tooth strength and wear resistance of steel. Under normal conditions the standard “Splined Bore” coupling will perform satisfactorily and the addition of the “Clamp Feature” compensates for various fit conditions. When heavy cyclic loads, reverse loading and high torque loads exist in combination with fit variations, spline tooth failures and fretting can be corrected by utilizing Magnaloy’s steel bushed coupling. Of course, to achieve optimum benefits, Magnaloy’s clamp feature is recommended - assuring accurate centering and positive retention of the coupling on the shaft.

PM 90 Couplings
When your priorities for a coupling are economy and strength... specify the all-new Magnaloy Type PM90. The PM90 is made from high-density powdered metal and is available in standard bores up to 1 1/8 inch maximum. Double set screws are standard in all bores 1/2 inch and over. The set screws are placed over the keyway and at a 450 angle to the keyway to allow greater hoop-stress generation and maximum shaft gripping. Magnaloy’s exclusive insert design allows easy installation and replacement without hub removal. The drive lug design provides even compressive loading with no radial loading of insert drive elements.

Magnaloy Couplings offer four-way flexibility (parallel, angular, axial and torsional) and require no lubrication. They are easily installed and properly aligned without use of special tools or equipment - a straight edge and hex wrench are the only tools required. Magnaloy’s insert reduces noise and vibration and permits needed flexibility for proper operation within alignment capabilities.

Magnaloy Coupling’s full range of flexible inserts permit custom design performance for a wide range of applications. All insert materials offer complete electrical insulation, as Magnaloy’s design eliminates all metal-to-metal contact.

SHAFT COLLARS

Ruland is a domestic manufacturer of shaft collars in multiple styles to fit shafts ranging from 1/8 to 6" and 3mm to 150mm. Shaft collars play a critical role in most industrial equipment, where they are used for guiding, spacing, locating, component alignment, and axial stopping. Ruland shaft collars are trusted in thousands of applications worldwide to operate without failure. Ruland shaft collars are available in various materials and finishes, including:
• 303 & 316 stainless steel with hardware of like material for consistent corrosion resistance.
• 1215 lead-free steel with proprietary black oxide or yellow zinc plated finish for compliance in all applications.

RIGID COUPLINGS

Rigid shaft couplings are available with or without keyways in one- and two-piece and set screw designs. Ruland manufactures them from select North American bar stock in 2024 aluminium for lightweight and low inertia, 1215 lead-free steel for general purpose use, and 303 stainless-steel for high corrosion resistance. Straight and step bore type rigid couplings are standard products for shafts ranging from 1/8" to 2" and 3mm to 50mm. Inch to metric conversion couplings are available by special order. Each rigid coupling is stamped with the Ruland name and the bore sizes for ease of identification.

RULAND SERVO COUPLINGS

Servo couplings from Ruland are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and materials to match differing application requirements. Choosing the correct servo coupling can be a difficult process that involves many performance factors including: shaft misalignment, RPM, space requirements, torque, and others. Matching a shaft coupling with these factors is critical to system performance. Ruland offers servo couplings in rigid, beam, bellows, curved jaw, disc, and oldham types allowing the user to select the coupling that best fits their application.

A) OLDHAM COUPLING - Ruland oldham couplings are a three-piece assembly with a balanced design comprised of two hubs and a center disk. This allows for a highly customizable coupling that allows the user to combine clamp and set screw hubs with inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores in sizes ranging from 1/8” to 1-1/8” and 3mm to 30mm. The center disk is available in three materials to allow designers to fit the coupling to their application requirements. While oldham couplings can accommodate small amounts of angular and axial misalignment, they are especially useful in parallel misalignment accommodating up to 10% of their OD in misalignment.

UNIVERSAL JOINTS

Ruland universal joints are available in single and double configurations with friction or needle bearings. Single U-joints are comprised of two yokes and a trunnion assembly to allow for use in confined spaces and angular misalignment up to 45°. Double U-joints are comprised of two yokes, two trunnion assemblies, and a center yoke to allow for larger gaps between shafts, parallel misalignment, and angular misalignment up to 90°. U-joints are manufactured from high-grade alloy steel for high strength and stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
