The housings SKF ConCentra roller bearing units are available in two housing series:

• a non-split plummer block housing in the SYNT series

These non-split, grey cast iron housings have the same excellent heat conducting properties and strength as comparably sized SKF split SNL plummer block housings.

Pillow (plummer) block roller bearing units and take-up roller bearing units consist of a spherical or tapered roller bearing mounted in a non-split housing that can be bolted to a support surface. This variant has a spherical roller bearing, a two-bolt base and SKF ConCentra locking, creating a true concentric tight fit, and setting the correct internal clearance within the bearing. The units are sealed and lubricated and ready to use. This bearing unit covers a wide range of requirements, in metric dimensions.

Browning^® mounted ball bearings offer multiple housing styles, materials and configurations. This features an extended inner race insert bearing with ball riding nylon retainer. The insert features a rivet to help prevent outer ring rotation and is available with the following locking mechanisms:

The contact seal reduces grease loss while reducing friction. The black oxide treated flinger helps prevent contaminant entry. Together they provide a good balance of protection. Cooper offers a wide variety of housing options to suit specific bearing types. These encompass housings for cylindrical roller bearings, housings for tapered roller bearings and housings for other bearings, and accommodate a multitude of specific applications and arrangements.

Most styles of Cooper housing are available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel. Special types of housing, alternative materials and housings to special dimensions are available on request.

Pedestals:

Pedestals (also called pillow blocks) are the most common mountings for Cooper bearings. Detailed design and the number of fixing bolts varies with the bearing series and size. This includes 2-bolt, 4-bolt, and large-bore options. Cooper offers pedestal ranges that allow direct replacement of SN, SD, and SAF pillow block units. This includes the SD compatible 08SDC heavy duty bearing pedestal and a modification of the standard pedestal - known as Z-line - for Marine applications.

Flanges

The second most popular housing option is the flange which is usually round or square. Special modifications (e.g. flat or bulkhead seal flange) are also available on request.

Additionally, take-up units are available as either tension type or push type. And Rod-end units are offered as shoe type or tee type.

There is also a selection of hanger mountings to choose from, including double-boss and triple-boss arrangements in addition to the standard single-boss hanger.

Special housings

Finally there are special housings, for example the water-cooled housing, designed primarily for use in steel mill continuous casters. The low profile housing is either cast or fabricated steel.

Split Roller Bearing TypesRetained Type Bearing (BR)
This bearing has integral lips on the outer race, to provide a surface for axial load. The axial load is accommodated on the inner race via the hardened clamp rings, which both align the inner race halves and provide roller guidance. In larger bearings the inner race is manufactured with integral ribs for roller guidance and axial load.

This type of bearing will locate the shaft axially as well as providing a means for taking axial load. The retained outer race must be located sideways against one of the housing's grooved shoulders, using the pins and screws provided. Only one retained unit should be mounted on any particular shaft. Additional care should be taken when mounting split roller bearing units on shafts using other, non-split types of bearings (ball, cylindrical, spherical or taper roller etc.) to ensure there are no other locating bearings used.

Expansion Type Bearing (BX)
This bearing is designed for radial loads only. As in the retained type bearing, the rollers are guided on the inner race by the hardened shoulders of the clamping rings.

During expansion or contraction of the shaft rollers are free to move across the plain outer race, offering virtually no resistance to axial movement. Limits for the amount of axial movement are given in the assembly and maintenance section.

Pillow Blocks 

Pillow blocks (plummer blocks) are the most common type of bearing unit. The complete units feature a bearing mounted in a simple, rigid housing. They are extensively used in a range of transmission equipment and general machinery.

Square Flanged Units 

These bearing housings have a square flange which can be easily attached to a machine with four bolts. With a simple mounting face, square flanged units are widely used.

Oval Flanged Units 

The bearing housing features a diamond-shaped flange for easy mounting to the machine base or side wall with two bolts. Eccentric collar ensures quick and positive locking to the shaft. Compact bearing unit enables compact machine designs, which ultimately helps to save energy and natural resource to keep environment clean.

• THERMOPLASTIC SERIES

The split bearing was invented in 1907 and its design has remained largely unchanged. Through innovative new components the GB Split Bearing is able to offer significantly increased capacities, flexibility and simplicity of fitting & maintenance.

The entire split bearing has been designed around the bearing cages and the numbers are quite breath-taking; the patent-pending bearing cage, Roller train, has allowed an increased radial and axial capacity of up to 70% and 1000% higher than any other split bearing in the world. The dramatic capacity increases allow Split Bearing to replace five series of split bearings with a single series which covers almost all existing requirements.

Craft Split Bearing Co is a Virginia-based manufacturer of split cylindrical roller bearings and a recognized leader in split bearing technology. The great advantage of a split bearing is its ease of replacement in the event of a bearing failure. Because the bearing is split down the shaft so that all components, even the sels, can be easily replaced, the task of replacing a bearing becomes a minor one.

The Craft Split Bearing is not only durable and rugged but contains many innovative features for which Craft has received patents. For example, all of the Craft pillow block bearings have a standard base-to-center height (although custom, metric, and large-bore bearings are also available).

Features of the Craft Split Bearing Pillow Block (Housing Cap)

Houses either an expansion (FL) or non-expansion bearing (HD). Inside diameter is spherically machined to accept the cartridge assembly, allowing the pillow block to compensate for misalignment up to 3%. Base-to-center height meets industry standards.

Cartridge

The spherically machined cartridge takes initial shaft misalignment externally, allowing the bearing and seals to remain parallel to the shaft at all times. Each cartridge comes drilled, tapped, and plugged in its lower half so that lubricant can be purged.

Outer Race

Made of 52100 steel, hardened to a Rockwell COF 59/62. The outer race joints are cut in a chevron so that the roller is carried across the split. The outer race comes in either a FLOAT (FL) or HELD (HD) type.

Aluminum Triple Labyrinth Seals

Craft's triple-labyrinth seals, unlike felt or lip type seals, rotate with the shaft eliminating and chance of shaft wear caused by the seal.

Inner Race

Made of 52100 steel, hardened to a Rockwell C 59/62. The split of the inner race is cut at a precise angle so that when the rollers cross the split they are carried across, having only point contact with the split.

Clamp Collars

Made of 4142 alloy and thru hardened rather than flame hardened. The inside lips of the clamp collars form the running track of the rollers and act as guides for the rollers. The Clamp Collars also assist the HD (Held) bearings in accepting axial loads.

Pillow Block Pedestal Housing

Like the cartridge, the split pedestal housing is made of high-quality, strong ductile iron and can be easily disassembled (by removing two bolts) for bearing replacement.

QCB® bearing housings are made of PBT high-grade glass-filled thermoplastic polyester and are completely interchangeable with conventional cast-iron housings, resulting in a maintenance free housing with excellent mechanical strength, stiffness and dimensional stability that will never rust or corrode. Developed for use where high standards of cleanliness are important or a significant amount of liquid is present such as in the food and beverage industries. The smooth housing surfaces are much more hygienic that equivalent cast-iron units whose rough surfaces can harbour objectionable dirt, mould and bacteria.

NO PLATING OR COATING TO CHIP OR PEEL

Coated or plated cast-iron housings can scratch, chip and peel. The very act of installation can damage the finish to be removed around the edges of the bolts. Because QBC® Thermoplastic housings are solid PBT, coatings are not required for protection. And even if they are scratched or chipped there is no vulnerable cast-iron to be exposed.

QCB® THERMOPLASTIC HOUSINGS ARE DURABLE

With a tensile strength of 17 300 psi, and the ability to be pressure washed with hot water, QCB® Thermoplastic housings will stand up to the toughest applications.
