Clamping & Locking Devices

Clamping device are used to minimize the distortion during the machining process. Once the workpiece is located, it is necessary to hold it against the machining force. The mechanism used for this is known clamps. They are work holding devices usually positioned above the supporting surfaces. A locking device is a mechanical component that prevents mated shafts and other machine elements from moving out of position when subjected to external forces. Operating conditions such as initial installation error, temperature variations, vibration and others can all cause issues. These are critical components.

Shaft Clamping Element 

Cross Shaft Clamping Elements, by means of frictional forces, provide connection of all types of transmission equipment to their respective shafts, enabling transmission of both torque and axial thrust loads. Precision tapered thrust cones within the clamping elements create high pressure between shaft and hub to securely fasten pulleys, sprockets, gears, etc.

Clamping Elements Type RCK 15/13/16

Designed for use with standardised ranges of pulleys, sprockets, and gears, the shaft clamping elements can accommodate a large range of shaft diameters with a hub of constant bore diameter. On clamping precise axial and radial positioning is provided, combined with medium torque transmission capability.

Clamping Elements Type RCK 15

 

These shaft clamping elements are very compact units capable of transmitting medium torques. Their design ensures good concentricity between hubs and shafts, without any other means of location. A slight axial movement between hub and shaft occurs during clamping. These units can be installed totally within the hub providing optimum safety, and minimal axial length.

Clamping Elements Type RCK 16

These clamping elements are basically to same design as RCK 13, but with increased diameter flange to locate hub and prevent axial movements, so combining good concentricity with positive axial location. The increase in friction between the cones due to axial restriction results in torque reduction of approx 20%, but this also means reduced surface pressures to both hub and shaft.

These shaft clamping elements are designed to give optimum concentricity, both radically and axially. Similar in design to the RCK 13, but with increased length to provide improved support, and reduced pressures on both shaft and hub. These units must always be installed inside the hub to ensure optimum concentricity. Axial movement of hub will occur during clamping operation.

Clamping Elements Type RCK 71

The RCK 71 is a type RCK 70 with addition of a distance ring to prevent axial movement of the hub during clamping. Due to the additional friction between the element and hub during clamping maximum torques are reduced, but with reduction in surface pressures also. This design can be mounted within the confines of a hub providing a stepped bore is provided to accommodate the flange.

Locking Assemblies 

For over 25 years they have been manufacturing clamping elements in their own manufacturing plants in Italy. They offer a very wide selection of standard products, and specific tailored products on request. The largest worldwide range of Clamping Elements and Shrink Discs available at all times. 

Conex reduces the machining costs, eliminates all the operations for axial fixing of the hub and to machine the keyway seats. This cost benefit can increase dramatically for small production batches.

The shaft diameter can be made smaller which accounts for further savings in materials and makes Conex ideal for heavy transmissions, overloads or continuous reversing.

Couplings

1. Flexsteel Disc Pack Couplings- Flexsteel is a zero backlash coupling which uses a disc pack made of stainless steel as a drive element, torsionally stiff, but axially and angulary flexible, to compensate for shafts misalignments. A sigle disc pack can compensate for angular and axial misalignments. Two disc packs can compensate for radial, angular and axial misalignments.

2. Metalflex-Servo couplings - Zero backlash couplings – high torsional stiffness- low inertia couplings - Metalflex is an innovative coupling for high performance applications, requiring repeatability, accuracy in positioning, motion and synchronization control at high speed. Metalflex is an assembly of two aluminium clamping hubs with a thin-walled stainless steel bellow, which remains stiff under torsional load, but is axially, radially and angularly flexible in order to compensate for misalignments within the connecting shafts: the result is a zero backlash, high torsional, stiffness, low inertia coupling.

3. CROWNGEAR Steel gear couplings - Crowngear is a double joint coupling manufactured from forged steel using as transmission element two crowned tooth geared hubs which engage two internal straight teeth flanges.

4. COMPOLASTIC Flexible couplings - Compolastic is a range of couplings made of two G25 cast iron, toothed hubs, precision machined, whose teeth work only at compression against an elastic element. Compolastic ensures a safe drive under any conditions, it absorbs torsional vibrations and compensates important axial, angular and radial misalignments of the shafts to be connected. Compolastic can be used at a temperature range of -30°C to +80°C.

5. COMPOGEAR Nylon gear coupling - Compogear is a range of couplings made of two steel, crowned teeth hubs, which are connected with a polyamide internally toothed sleeve. Compogear is resistant to all types of lubricants and hydraulic fluids and can be used at a temperature range of -25°C +80°C.

 

Torque Limiters

The torque limiter acts as overload protection in machines using gears, pulleys or couplings. Using a torque limiter you have a complete operational safety in machines subject to overloads. High repetitive disengagement and re-engagement accuracy is easily achieved, together with long service life. No maintenance required.

PNEUMATIC CLAMPING ELEMENT (F) - The tightening is done using an amplification system with inclined plane. Made in construction steel, for high axial and horizontal stiffness.

DOUBLE PISTON ELEMENT (FDP) - New line created to obtain a high clamping force in small spaces. Dual Locking Action made by a pair of pistons for each tightening part.

POWERED DOUBLE PISTON ELEMENT (FDPH) - New line created to obtain a high clamping force in small spaces. Powered Dual Locking Action: with a pair of pistons for each tightening part. The clamping force of this element is double that of FRC line.

CLAMPING AND BRAKING ELEMENT (FDPM) - Braking element with high clamping force. Material and shape of contact parts allow high clamping force without damaging the rail.

SINGLE CYLINDER ELEMENT (FMC) - Compact and inexpensive locking element. These characteristics are obtained using a single contact section. The clamping action is allowed by the floating system of the body that ensures:a) The clamping of the rail on one side by the contact section and on the other by the body itself;b) A symmetrical distribution of clamping force on the linear guide
c) Absolutely no friction between the linear guide with the body and with the contact section when the clamping is released.

MANUAL CLAMPING ELEMENT FOR LINEAR (FMN) - Simple and reliable, this clamping element is manually controlled. By acting on the adjustable locking lever, the contact profiles press with sync on the surfaces of the rail. The floating profiles of contact ensure a symmetrical distribution of the force on the linear guide. New ergonomic design.

FOR MINIATURE LINEAR GUIDES (FMN-M) - Manual clamping element for miniature linear guides. By acting on the locking screw, the contact sections press with sync on the surfaces of the rail. The floating profiles of contact ensure a symmetrical distribution of the force on the linear guide. New ergonomic design to save space.

Ball bearing Turntables and Slewing Rings

Ball bearing turntables are the product which started the success story of JOST in 1952. Today, they are used on all the world ‘s roads. And not only that: They are also used in agriculture, at airports and railway stations, in mining and in a wide range of special applications, such as in TRIDEC forced steering systems.

In that way they are a genuine product of the JOST-World. They cover the whole range of trailer technology and offer the best solution for each application. At the same time, the ball bearing turntables are subject to constant further development, thus impressing with their innovative benefits and proven quality time and again. 

JOST ball bearing turntables have a permanent cathode dip coating (CDC). The CDC offers the ideal surface sealing method and therefore excellent protection against corrosion. Thanks to the evenly thin coating, it may be painted over at any time. In the case of designs with rubber sealing lips, care must be taken to ensure controlled drying in a heat chamber (air temperature max. 75 °C). If necessary, clear any sealing lips that have become clogged by the application of paint around their edges with a blunt object. Additional paint application to the screw surfaces should be avoided due to the unfavourable settling behaviour of the screw connection.

Low-maintenance ball bearing turntables and slewing rings Low-maintenance ball bearing turntables and slewing rings (green type plate) are equipped with a full-volume special grease filling that, in combination with the two sealing lips, allows freedom from maintenance for up to 3 years or 300,000 km under normal usage conditions. Re-lubrication is not required during commissioning. Once the maintenance-free period / distance has been completed, the ball bearing turntable or slewing ring must be subjected to thorough re-lubrication.Ball bearing turntables (BBT) and slewing rings (SR) are add-on parts for truck trailers and agricultural vehicles that connect the A-frame in a rotatable manner with the trailer frame. They must always be operated in accordance with the associated vehicle's operating instructions. The permissible load data for JOST ball bearing turntables and slewing rings can be found in the information contained in the JOST product catalogue. Ball bearing turntables and slewing rings are only suitable for swivel movements.

Twist locks

Flexibility, compatibility, stability and safety are the basic parameters for a future-oriented motor pool. JOST ensures that these parameters can be satisfied with its international quality standards and a global sales and after sales service network. Twist locks connect containers to the carrier vehicle. The twist locks must always be used as set out in the instructions in the operating manual for the relevant vehicle. In Germany you must comply with the TÜV regulations and the Road Traffic ActStVZO, as well as the existing standards.

Standard Locking Devices –
MAV Internal Locking Assemblies

Also known as clamping units, MAV internal locking assemblies mount inside the hub. As the screws are tightened, the resulting high radial forces create an interference fit that is a zero-backlash connection between the shaft and hub.

MAV locking assemblies use tapers that generate high radial forces when pushed together, creating high contact pressure and a zero-backlash connection. The locking assemblies mount gears, pulleys, cams, levers, rotors, and similar devices onto shafts, while our rigid couplings connect two shafts. MAV devices allow excellent centering between hub and shaft and are well balanced. Because of the high radial forces produced during installation, MAV devices can handle heavy torsional, axial, radial, or bending loads.

MAV Stainless Steel

All MAV units are available in stainless steel, including martensitic or austenitic stainless steel. Zinc plating, nickel plating, and phosphate treatment also are available. Please note, however, that any plating or treatment will impact performance. Our technical team can help you with the correct selection for your application.

MAV Mini Series

All MAV keyless locking device products are available in smaller sizes (starting from 5 mm) — typical sizes for packaging machines, medical devices, and linear guides.

MAV Rigid Couplings

MAV rigid shaft couplings connect two shafts, transferring rotary motion from a driving shaft to a driven shaft. Simple and durable, MAV rigid shaft couplings transmit more power than comparable flexible shaft couplings. Unable to compensate for misalignment, they must be used in applications where the shafts are aligned. MAV rigid couplings are commonly used in automation, motion control, power transmission, as well as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and maintenance, repair, and operation (MRO) applications.

Shrink Discs –
MAV External Locking Devices

MAV shrink discs are installed externally on a hollow shaft or hub to connect it to a shaft, for example— in a hollow-shaft gearbox. When the shrink disc’s locking screws are tightened, the thrust rings are drawn together and compress the inner ring. This creates an interference fit by applying pressure to the outside of the hub, thus clamping it onto the shaft. Shrink discs are the preferred alternative to conventional shrink, shrink/fit/press fit, tapered bushings or keyways.

Because the force applied to the hub is always within the elastic limit of the material, the hub springs back when the force is released, making MAV external locking devices easy to remove.
